Live music in Taksim and Beyoğlu: where to go

If you are visiting Istanbul, chances are you are staying in or near Beyoğlu, and that is good news for music lovers. The area around İstiklal Avenue, Galata, Cihangir and Karaköy has the highest concentration of live music venues in the city. You can hear jazz, rock, Turkish folk, fasıl and techno without ever taking a taxi.

İstiklal and Taksim: rock and concert halls

Around Taksim you will find the bigger rock stages. Dorock XL Venue Taksim hosts rock concerts, Dorock Heavy Metal Club covers the heavier end, and Blind mixes live acts with electronic nights. For curated programs, Fiba Salon İKSV and Borusan Müzik Evi book jazz, world and classical music.

If you just want a pint and a band, Celtic Irish Pub and Oldies Taksim are easygoing options. Walking the side streets off İstiklal and following the sound is a perfectly valid strategy.

Galata: the jazz quarter

The streets around Galata Tower are Istanbul's jazz heartland. Nardis Jazz Club is the classic, an intimate room where people come to listen. Asa-Khai Jazz Club, Bova and Club Lupe also feature jazz and related styles, and Swing İstanbul in the historic Mısır Apartmanı hosts swing dance nights.

Jazz clubs are small, so book ahead on weekends. Programs are usually posted on the venue's Instagram.

Cihangir and Karaköy: meyhane nights

A meyhane is a Turkish tavern where meze, rakı and music go together. 'Yeni nesil' (new generation) places such as Taksim Yeni Nesil Meyhane, Sil Baştan Cihangir and Hadi Karaköy Yeni Nesil Meyhane mix fasıl with Turkish pop and get loud as the night goes on. For a more traditional feel, try Krepen'deki Kadir'in Yeri, Akbabalı Meyhane or Galata Meyhanesi.

You book a table rather than a ticket. Ask the venue about reservations and any minimum spend, since terms vary.

Turkish folk bars

Türkü bars are where locals sing along to folk songs from every corner of Anatolia, usually led by a bağlama player. Mektup, Gizli Bahçe, Hancı Sahne, Toprak Sahne Taksim, Damlalar Türküevi and Otantik Beyoğlu are well-known spots.

Many are on upper floors of old buildings off İstiklal, so look up for signs. Even without Turkish, the atmosphere is welcoming and memorable.

After midnight: clubs

When the bands stop, the DJs start. 360 Istanbul, Kastel, Club Olimpia Taksim, Frankhan Selectist and Suma Han run DJ nights that go late. Events change weekly, so check the This week page for line-ups.

Bring ID; some clubs check it at the door.

A sample night in Beyoğlu

Start in Karaköy with an early dinner at a meyhane near the water. Walk up the hill toward Galata and catch the first set at a jazz club. Later, dive into the side streets off İstiklal: sing along at a türkü bar or catch a band at a rock stage. If you still have energy after midnight, finish at an electronic club.

All of this is walkable, but the hills are real, so wear comfortable shoes. Pick one or two venues in advance and check their programs; the GIGO map shows what is nearby by genre.

Practical tips

The M2 metro stops at Taksim, the historic Tünel and the funicular link to Karaköy, and the tram runs along the waterfront. Late at night, use a licensed taxi or an app. İstiklal gets very crowded on weekends, so agree on a meeting point.
