Fasıl in Istanbul: where to hear Turkish tavern music

Fasıl is the soundtrack of an Istanbul celebration. A small band with clarinet, violin, kanun and darbuka plays classic Turkish songs while the tables eat, drink rakı and sing along. If you have ever seen a video of a Turkish dinner where the whole room is clapping and dancing, there was probably a fasıl band behind it.

What is fasıl?

Strictly speaking, a fasıl is a suite of pieces in Turkish classical music played in the same makam (mode). In everyday Istanbul use, it means the live music in a meyhane: a band moving between tables, playing old Istanbul songs, dance tunes and the classics everybody knows.

The night starts slowly with gentler songs over cold meze. As the hours pass, the tempo rises, and by the end people are on their feet. Requests and tips for the band are part of the tradition.

Don't worry if you don't know the songs. A good fasıl band reads the room and plays to the table, so just clap along, raise a glass and let the music carry the night. Many visitors say it was the most memorable evening of their trip.

Kadıköy

On the Asian side, Kadıköy is a fasıl stronghold. Ziyade Fasıl, Bizbize Fasıl and Bostancı Fasıl carry it in their names. Heybeli Sahne and BİBUSE Musiki Meyhanesi are known for Turkish classical music, while Oda Restaurant & Bar and Sanatif Sahne blend it with other styles.

Come by ferry and you get a Bosphorus crossing as a bonus. Book a table on weekends.

Beyoğlu

For a traditional table, try Krepen'deki Kadir'in Yeri, Akbabalı Meyhane or Galata Meyhanesi. For a more stage-oriented night, Hadi Sahne and Pera Adali Restaurant are popular choices.

After dinner, Beyoğlu's bars and clubs are a short walk away.

Maltepe

Along the Asian-side coast, Maltepe has a very local fasıl scene: Çakılkeyf Fasıl, Nevâli Meyhane, Bir Bakan Meyhanesi, Hayalmest Meyhane and Beşçeşmeler Köyiçi. These are places with regulars where the band knows the tables.

If you are celebrating a birthday, tell the venue when you book; a song for your table is a lovely surprise.

Kumkapı and the old city

In Fatih, Kumkapı is one of Istanbul's oldest tavern neighborhoods. Kumkapı Sütliman Fasıl Meyhane keeps the classic tradition, and Beyaz İnci Restaurant on the Galata Bridge and Gar Musichall also host fasıl and Turkish classical music.

It pairs perfectly with a day of sightseeing in Sultanahmet: see the monuments, then end the day at a fasıl table.

Show-style venues

In Sarıyer, Cahide Palazzo Maslak, Yeni Cabaret and S'agapo Sahne offer a gazino-style evening with singers and a stage show. Masal Sahne in Ataşehir and Boâz Live in Beşiktaş are also on the list.

These nights tend to follow a set program, so ask about timing when you book.

Classic, gazino or new generation?

Classic meyhanes keep it acoustic and intimate. Gazino-style venues have a stage, soloists and a show. New generation meyhanes mix fasıl with Turkish pop and DJs for a party atmosphere. Pick the one that matches your evening.

Genre tags on GIGO venue cards help you tell them apart before you go.

Booking and etiquette

You book a table rather than a ticket. Some nights have set menus or minimum spends; we don't list prices because they change, so ask when you book. Tipping the band after a request or a song at your table is customary.
