Rock bars in Istanbul: from Kadıköy to Taksim

Istanbul loves rock. Turkish rock has its own decades-long tradition, cover bands fill bars every night of the week, and the city's concert halls regularly host international tours. If you want loud guitars and a crowd that sings every word, you are in the right city.

Kadıköy: the rock capital

Kadıköy on the Asian side is the heart of Istanbul's rock scene. Dorock XL Kadıköy hosts big rock nights, while Kadıköy Sahne, Karga and The Wall Saloon & Performance give stages to alternative and rock bands. Moda Kayıkhane, Komünite Kadıköy and Ağaç Ev Kadıköy also book rock, and Kadıköy 45'lik Bar leans nostalgic.

Most bars are around the market and Kadife Sokak (often called 'Bar Street'), so you can hop between sets.

Taksim: rock clubs

On the European side, Dorock XL Venue Taksim hosts larger rock shows and Dorock Heavy Metal Club covers the heavy end. Blind mixes live rock and electronic nights, and Celtic Irish Pub and Oldies Taksim are relaxed pub options with live music.

Kaktüs Cihangir, Sanat Performans and Arsen Lüpen Taksim are also on rock fans' radar.

Big concerts

International and big Turkish rock acts usually play KüçükÇiftlik Park, Harbiye Open-Air Theatre, Yapı Kredi bomontiada or Babylon in Şişli, and Zorlu PSM or Kutu Live in Beşiktaş. Life Park in Sarıyer hosts open-air shows.

Tickets go on sale weeks ahead. Buy through the official event page and check door times.

Beyond the center

Kartal has Beyrut Performans and Sahne Marin, and Beylikdüzü has Beylikdüzü 45'lik. These are local spots for people living away from the center.

They tend to draw a neighborhood crowd rather than visitors, with cover bands playing the Turkish and international hits everyone knows. If you live out in these districts as an expat, they are an easy way to get a dose of live guitars without crossing the city, and a friendly place to meet locals who share your taste in music.

Turkish rock: a quick primer

You will hear a lot of Turkish rock, a genre with roots in 1960s and 70s Anatolian rock, which fused psychedelic rock with folk melodies. Today's scene ranges from classic Turkish rock anthems to alternative and indie bands. Don't worry if you don't know the songs; the crowd's energy is contagious.

Prefer English-language classics? Many cover bands mix in classic rock, and tags on GIGO venue cards show whether a place leans Turkish rock, classic rock, metal or indie.

Cover night or concert?

Rock bars have two kinds of nights: cover bands playing well-known songs, often with free or low entry, and ticketed shows by original bands. Cover nights are great for a casual night out; concerts are for seeing a band you love up close.

We don't list prices since they change; check with the venue before you go.

A two-continent rock night

Start in Kadıköy with an early set, catch the ferry before it stops running and finish at a Taksim rock club, or do it in reverse. It is a very Istanbul way to spend a Saturday. Keep last ferry and metro times in mind; Marmaray and taxis are your backup.

Before you go

Weekends are busiest, but many bars have live music on weeknights. The venue's Instagram is the best source; GIGO's Tonight and This week pages collect current events.

GIGO's data comes from community research and venue announcements. Confirm details with the venue, then turn it up. Find the gig. Go.
