Live music in Kadıköy: a guide for visitors and expats

Ask expats in Istanbul where they actually go out, and many will say Kadıköy. The Asian-side neighborhood is relaxed, creative and full of music: rock bars in Moda, folk singers in small stages, fasıl in old-school taverns and the occasional jazz night on a rooftop. It feels less touristy than Taksim, and that is exactly its charm.

Getting there: take the ferry

The best way to arrive is by ferry from Karaköy, Eminönü or Beşiktaş. The crossing takes about twenty minutes, and at sunset it is one of the most beautiful rides in the city. From the pier, most venues are a short walk up into the streets of the center, Moda and Yeldeğirmeni.

Going back late? Check the last ferry before you settle in. The Marmaray rail line under the Bosphorus and taxis are reliable backups.

Rock and alternative in Moda and Bahariye

Kadıköy is the heart of Istanbul's rock scene. Dorock XL Kadıköy hosts bigger rock shows, while Kadıköy Sahne, Karga and The Wall Saloon & Performance cover alternative and rock nights. Moda Kayıkhane, close to the seafront, books a wide mix of genres.

Venues are close together, so you can catch one band and walk to another. Turkish rock is a big part of the repertoire; even if you don't know the songs, the crowd singing along is half the experience.

Jazz, swing and terrace evenings

The jazz side is smaller but friendly. Ağaç Ev Kadıköy is known for acoustic and jazz nights, and the terrace jazz evenings at İstanbul Kitapçısı Kadıköy are a local favorite. Swing dancers gather at Swing Planet Kadıköy Stüdyo and Swing İstanbul Yeldeğirmeni Stüdyosu, which are a great way to meet people if you are new in town.

Cultural spaces like Yeldeğirmeni Sanat Merkezi and Karşı Sahne host occasional jazz and world music concerts, so watch their announcements.

Turkish folk and fasıl: the local classics

For a truly local night, try a türkü (Turkish folk) venue. Heybeli Sahne, Fil Sahne and Komünite Kadıköy feature bağlama players and singers, and the crowd often joins in. For fasıl, the classic tavern music played with clarinet, violin and kanun, look at Ziyade Fasıl, Bizbize Fasıl and Bostancı Fasıl.

In a meyhane, music comes with dinner: meze, grilled fish and rakı. You normally book a table rather than buy a ticket. Ask about reservations and any minimum spend directly, since terms vary by venue.

Concert halls

Bostancı Gösteri Merkezi (BGM) hosts larger concerts, and Kadıköy Belediyesi Süreyya Operası, a beautifully restored 1920s theater, stages opera, classical music and special concerts. These are ticketed events, so book through the official event page.

A concert at Süreyya followed by a drink in Moda is one of the nicest evenings Kadıköy offers.

A sample night in Kadıköy

Catch an early evening ferry, walk up from the pier through the market streets and start with dinner at a meyhane in Moda. As the meze arrive, the musicians tune up and the room warms. After dinner, head to a rock bar around Bahariye or Kadife Sokak for the first set, or pick a smaller venue with an acoustic or jazz night for a calmer finish.

The GIGO map lets you filter by genre and see what is within walking distance, which is handy when you don't know the streets yet.

Tips before you go

Nights start late here; many bands only go on late in the evening. Programs are often posted on Instagram in Turkish, so a translation app helps. We don't list prices or hours because they change.

GIGO's data comes from community research and venues' own announcements. Confirm details with the venue, then enjoy one of Istanbul's best neighborhoods for music. Find the gig. Go.
